IELTS Writing Task 1 GT - Informal Invitation letter #1

Write a letter to your friend who lives in another country and in your letter

- Invite him/her to a public event in your country.

- Describe the public event.

- Explain about other plans you have for your friend.

Hi John,

How have you been since we last met?

I though I'd drop you a line and see if you fancy coming over for Moon Festival which is on September 2nd.

Moon Festival is the second most important festival after the Lunar New Year. It is a traditional event celebrating re-union for family members and friends. On the day, we will visit some local shrines and pray for health and wellness. At night, there will be many celebration activities such as Lion dance, lightning paper lanterns, eating mooncakes. You may also attend cooking show where you can make your own mooncake which I'm sure you'll love.

While you're over, we'll be able to do a trip to Nha Trang City as I know you've always wanted to visit. It would be your great escape from the cold in England, and you can enjoy yourself lying on the sunny beach, riding jetski and going scuba diving. You'll also be able to taste various searfoods and many Nha Trang authentic cuisines.

I really hope you'll be able to come over. It won't be the same without you.

Write back soon,

Anh

You bought a TV a week ago but when you got home you discovered it did not work properly. You called customer service to report the problem but you have not yet received any help.

Write a letter to the company and in you letter:

1. Introduce yourself

2. Explain the problem

3. And state what action you would like from the company.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to report the faulty TV that I purchased from your company on Tuesday last week.

My name is Anh Hong, and I am one of you loyal customers. I live in district 8 and have been using your services and buying your products for the last 10 years.

On Tuesday, 12th June, I visited your store to purchase a TV. I bought a Sony LED TV with serial ALFJJALD. On purchasing this TV, I was assured that this was the latest model and the best there was to buy. However, when I got home I discovered that not only did the remote control not work but also the picture quality was not as good as promised, in fact it was quite blurry. I called your customer service hotline immediately on the same day, and they assured me to send a replacement within two days. I am disappointed to say that this has not happened, and I have received no communication since then.

I am truly displeased  with both the product quality as well as the poor service that I have received. I hope the problem will be resolved prompty. I expect to receive a replacement TV or have the current one repaired but only if it could be fixed within one day.

I look forward to hearing back from you immediately.

Yours faithfully,

Anh Hong

IELTS Writing Task 1 GT - Formal Apology #1

Write a letter to your boss apologising for the meeting you missed at work

1. Apologise for missing the meeting.

2. Explain what happened.

3. Say what you will go to compensate.

Dear Mr Donald,

I am writing to apologise for the meeting that I missed on December 1st about upcoming year annual budget plan.

I am sincerely sorry for not being able to attend this meeting. I am aware the importance of the meeting but, unfortunately, my absence was unavoidable.

The reason for not attending this meeting was that I had a car accident on the way to work that day. Although the accident was not serious, I was taken to the local hospital for a check up, and not allowed to leave until I had been given the all clear from a doctor.

I understand how crucial this meeting was and, therefore, I have asked one of my colleagues, Ms Sandra Brown, to review the meeting after work today. We will go over all the budget plan, and also assess the expenditure plans from the related departments. By the end of today, I will be up to speed with all plans.

I hope you will forgive my absence, and be assured of my commitment to this company and its future.

Your sincerely,

Anh Hong

IELTS Writing Task 1 GT - Informal Apology letter #1

Write a letter to a friend. You have borrowed something from your friend and it got damaged.

1. Apologize for damaging the product.

2. Explain what happened.

3. Say how are you going to fix the issue.

Dear Emily

Sorry it's taken me so long to write to you but at last I put my pen to paper to explain why I haven't returned the MasterChef Cooking book I borrowed from you.

To be honest, I've been feeling so guilty that I delayed writing to you. I have to own up that I damaged the book accidentally. I'm so very sorry. I know how important that book is to you as it was a birthday gift from your late father.

What happened is that I had been reading up on the chapter about cooking chicken when I knocked over my cup of coffee which splashed all over the book. Most of the stain is on the pages that were open at the time.

I've sent the book away to be repaired. I didn't realize that was even possible until I researched it from the Internet. Anyway, it should be as good as new when I get it back next week, and then I'll send it on to you.

Again, I'm so sorry for the delay in telling you. I hope you can forgive me.

Best wishes

Anh

Hi John,

Sorry it's taken me so long to write to you but at last I put up my pen to paper to explain why I haven't returned the Sony DVD Player that I borrowed from you.

To be honest, I've been feeling so guilty that I delayed writing to you. I have to own up that I damaged the device accidentally. I'm so very sorry. I know how important that player is to you as it was your father's gift.

What happened is that I had been listening my daily disc when I knocked over my cup of coffee which splashed over the device. I tried cleaning all the liquid and dried up the equipment as quickly as I could, but the DVD player was broken eventually.

I've contact the local supplier to purchase any available items, and luckily they are able to ship one to me next week. Once I receive the product, I will send it on to you.

Again, I'm so sorry for the delay in telling you. Hope you can forgive me.

Best wishes

Anh

IELTS Sample disscusion essay - Animal experiment in medicines

7. Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favor of them because of their benefits to humanity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that medicines and other products are routinely tested on animals before they are cleared for human use. While I tend towards the viewpoint that animal testing is morally wrong, I would have to support a limited amount of animal experimentation for the development of medicines.

On the one hand, there are clear ethical arguments against animal experimentation. To use a common example of this practice, laboratory mice may be given an illness so that the effectiveness of a new drug can be measured. Opponents of such research argue that humans have no right to subject animals to this kind of trauma, and that the lives of all creatures should be respected. They believe that the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused, and that scientists should use alternative methods of research.

On the other hand, reliable alternatives to animal experimentation may not always be available. Supporters of the use of animals in medical research believe that a certain amount of suffering on the part of mice or rats can be justified if human lives are saved. They argue that opponents of such research might feel differently if a member of their own families needed a medical treatment that had been developed through the use of animal experimentation. Personally, I agree with the banning of animal testing for non-medical products, but I feel that it may be a necessary evil where new drugs and medical procedures are concerned.

In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be wrong to ban testing on animals for vital medical research until equally effective alternatives have been developed.

IELTS Sample opinion - Teenager

6. Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?

Many young people work on a volunteer basis, and this can only be beneficial for both the individual and society as a whole. However, I do not agree that we should therefore force all teenagers to do unpaid work.

Most young people are already under enough pressure with their studies, without being given the added responsibility of working in their spare time. School is just as demanding as a full-time job, and teachers expect their students to do homework and exam revision on top of attending lessons every day. When young people do have some free time, we should encourage them to enjoy it with their friends or to spend it doing sports and other leisure activities. They have many years of work ahead of them when they finish their studies.

At the same time, I do not believe that society has anything to gain from obliging young people to do unpaid work. In fact, I would argue that it goes against the values of a free and fair society to force a group of people to do something against their will. Doing this can only lead to resentment amongst young people, who would feel that they were being used, and parents, who would not want to be told how to raise their children. Currently, nobody is forced to volunteer, and this is surely the best system.

In conclusion, teenagers may choose to work for free and help others, but in my opinion we should not make this compulsory.

IELTS Sample 2 part essay - Career

5. Many people decide on a career path early in their lives and keep to it. This, they argue, leads to a more satisfying working life. To what extent do you agree with this view? What other things can people do in order to have a satisfying working life?

It is true that some people know from an early age what career they want to pursue, and they are happy to spend the rest of their lives in the same profession. While I accept that this may suit many people, I believe that others enjoy changing careers or seeking job satisfaction in different ways.

On the one hand, having a defined career path can certainly lead to a satisfying working life. Many people decide as young children what they want to do as adults, and it gives them a great sense of satisfaction to work towards their goals and gradually achieve them. For example, many children dream of becoming doctors, but to realize this ambition they need to gain the relevant qualifications and undertake years of training. In my experience, very few people who have qualified as doctors choose to change career because they find their work so rewarding, and because they have invested so much time and effort to reach their goal.

On the other hand, people find happiness in their working lives in different ways. Firstly, not everyone dreams of doing a particular job, and it can be equally rewarding to try a variety of professions; starting out on a completely new career path can be a reinvigorating experience. Secondly, some people see their jobs as simply a means of earning money, and they are happy if their salary is high enough to allow them to enjoy life outside work. Finally, job satisfaction is often the result of working conditions, rather than the career itself. For example, a positive working atmosphere, enthusiastic colleagues, and an inspirational boss can make working life much more satisfying, regardless of the profession.

In conclusion, it can certainly be satisfying to pursue a particular career for the whole of one's life, but this is by no means the only route to fulfillment.
